Abstract:In the light of the prominent problems in college English compositions,scholars abroad and in China have conducted a lot of research on teaching content,teaching methods,teaching modes,etc.and harvested some successes with practical values.However,from the perspective of language expression,the frequent appearance of language avoidance,if ignored,is likely to not only have an immediate negative effect on the composition quality,but also severely spoil the language idiomaticality,accuracy and variety.Therefore,it is of great significance to research into language avoidance and work out solutions to it.Language avoidance involves complex reasons,but through personal interview data analysis we come up with the finding that it is chiefly concerned with learning strategies and language acquisition patterns.On the basis of this finding,we assume that as long as learners make adjustments in learning strategies and methods,they are able to remove language avoidance successfully and produce adequate language subsequently.Having studied language avoidance this paper has classified language avoidance into nine categories by means of text observation,note-taking and interview,analyzed their underlying reasons,then with the assistance of lexical chunks,proposed three effective countermeasures concerning how to remove language avoidance and to improve college students’ English written communicative competence.
