Abstract:Stewardship behavior,a type of pro-organizational behavior,refers to one’ s willingness to protect others’ long-term welfare at the cost of his or her own interest pursuit.Different from agency behavior,stewardship behavior bears certain similarity with altruistic behavior and organizational citizenship behavior,but they are different constructs and make different effects to organizations.In the aspect of antecedents,stewardship behavior is triggered by individual characteristics,psychological cognition and other internal factors,and also determined by leadership,organizational context,cultural context and other external factors.In the aspect of effects,stewardship behavior positively impacts organizational performance,innovation and employee creativity.Future research on stewardship behavior in organization can be improved in the following aspects,including:1) clarifying the connotation and measurement of stewardship behavior; 2) improving the research design and research method of stewardship behavior; 3) investigating the dynamic evolution of stewardship behavior; 4) building a multilevel model of stewardship behavior; 5) promoting the empirical study on the consequences of stewardship behavior;6) deeply investigating stewardship behavior from the perspective of employee-organization relationships.
